Best countdown ever under way, courtesy of Idolator

I’ve been loving Gawker’s dedicated music blog Idolator since it started, and in the last few weeks in particular it’s turned into probably the best combination of fun gossip, detailed opinion and sharp-eyed hard news reporting on music currently out there. The team of Maura Johnston, Jess Harvell and various regulars including Michelangelo Matos is a monster in the best way — check them out regularly.

That all said, a great new feature just kicked in that’s a treat — Jess’s mom starts counting down her top 100 r’n'b songs of all time, with brief notes of explanation and handy YouTube clips. You might raise your eyebrows and think that’s simply twee nepotism, but there is an explanation provided, and the unspoken point is the key one — music love and obsession is a potential for everyone and anyone, no matter (and maybe especially because of) who they are and what they enjoy. Look down your nose and think you’re too cool for her taste and her style? Let’s see how you’ll be thinking years from now, and if you still have the same spirit and straight-up love for what you like as she does.

So check it out. It’s damn well worth it.
