Feeling good as a music reviewer — an example

So there’s this fellow named Tim Larson — friendly guy, good singer and performer — called to my attention by a longtime musician/PR guy I know, Pat O. Tim and I end up chatting a bit and I get a copy of his album, No Weapons, No Allies, which I reviewed for the AMG. Today Tim kindly noted that on a blog and added: “finally a reviewer who got what i was going for!”

Which is the kind of good thrill a music reviewer enjoys — now don’t get me wrong, there’s more than mutual backscratching at work, though to an extent that plays into it. But on a larger front, even if a review is negative, one wants to be able to sense what drives an artist, what makes them tick and/or what explains their work best. I’m not always successful with that, in my own hypercritical eyes in fact I barely am. But to know that it worked in this case was terribly flattering.

No more to add than that — still under the weather and not entirely here — but just wanted to say thanks to Tim for that. By all means, everyone, check him out. He’s a good sort with good songs.
